Name It Before You Game It!

Before you hit the big red launch button on your next game, here’s something that could save you a world of pain: check your name. No, seriously. You wouldn’t want to find out after all those sleepless nights that your cool game studio name is already taken by someone else, would you?

Trademark disputes are like mini-boss fights. But here’s the kicker – bigger companies have bigger swords (read: money), and you might not have the time or cash to fight it out. Just ask the devs behind MADiSON. They picked a name that seemed fine… until it wasn’t. Turns out, “Nosebleed Games” was a little too close to “Nosebleed Interactive.” Long story short, they had to rebrand as “Bloodius Games.”

Here’s the golden rule: don’t just trust the trademark register. Sure, it’s a good place to start, but the real world doesn’t always follow the same rules. Someone could have been using that name for years, building up what we call “unregistered rights.” And trust me, that can still mess with your plans.

So, before you unleash your beast of a game, do a deep dive. Google it. Check out gaming platforms like Steam. If your dream name pops up elsewhere, it might be time to rethink things. And, if in doubt, talk to a lawyer – they’re like the healers of the trademark battlefield.
